NO FUCKING WAY!!! Cancer is a disease. HIV is a disease. Pneumonia is a disease. Sure, have a drink, have 10, but when you start asking me to pay taxes for your recovery, just because you can’t control yourself, you can get fucked. I’m sick and tired of people with no will power! Yeah, I smoke, I probably could quit if I tried, but I don’t want to. Yet I’m not asking hard working people to give me money to give it up. It’s a fucking joke.
Alcoholism is a serious mental disease, most people who are truly classified as alcoholics need help to stop. It is a drug addiction. Would you ever ask a meth addict to just quit. “Come on, Brian, don’t you think you’ve had enough? Give up the meth!” Never. Alcohol is really addictive. That’s why the alcohol companies are raping us with profits. However, MOST alcoholics do not need expensive treatment, they need AA and counseling. Paying for someone else’s recovery in what way? Offering low cost substance abuse services by paying a little in taxes? Alcoholism prevention measures? I guess the bigger question is: what kind of society do you want? A functioning one? Me too. We pay for social welfare programs that help us function as a society, it’s called altruism, and we all need to abide by it. Also, AA IS free and is recommended for most people. I highly doubt you will be paying for new livers for alcoholics, or high priced rehab centers for every person with a DUI. Yes, we may need to sponsor government run counseling services but there are also not-for-profit resources available run by donations.
So, what do you mean, exactly? What are you really against? Socialism? Don’t let capitalism brainwash you? When you are down and out, you will need someone to help you too. Are you rich? Do you have a life vest? Some of us don’t. Some of us are born into shitty situations and we climb out and if we fall, if we dare fall, we are fucked. Some of us get through it but some people need extra help to become functioning members of society.
I am an alcoholic and was lucky enough to have friends by my side, but I DID not have any govt handouts and I did not have rich parents, so I had to pay for everything that happened to me on my own. It would have been nice to have somewhere to go, somewhere to turn. We are scoffed, spit on, but we are misguided. We are fucked in the head, but that doesn’t make us any less than you. If people would have given up on me, a lot of good work for animals and people with developmental disabilities would not exist.
“Try to learn to breathe deeply, really to taste food when you eat, and when you sleep really to sleep. Try as much as possible to be wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.”—William Saroyan (via thatkindofwoman)
Jack is a writer. Well, no, he isn’t. If you can imagine a blocked drain, regurgitating its contents as a sort of foul smelling backwash, from dank-depth sewer to pristine suburban kitchen, that describes Jack’s words. Not a writer, a spewer of words. Here’s Jack: I bleed words onto the page, I…
oh, money, you are such a cruel, playful little thing. I do unspeakable things for you. I rise every day at 5 am for you just to hear your siren song. But you are so elusive, you play so coy. I sit and pine for you day after day while others go out and play. And everytime I have you, ah! you slip so serpentine away. Money, what does Bank of America have that I don’t have?
The Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution prohibits any US citizen to be denied the right to vote based on sex. It was ratified today, 91 years ago. The amendment was the culmination of the women’s suffrage movement, which fought at both state and national levels to achieve the vote.
